What is Holistic?

A Holistic Therapy is a therapy..... "which uses an approach to patient care in which the physical, mental and social factors in the patients condition are taken into account, rather than just the diagnosed disease." Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary.

Holistic therapies deal with the 'whole' person. They treat the body as a whole and integrated system, not a collection of isolated parts. Medicine can only truly be holistic if it acknowledges the social and cultural context in which the 'illness' and the desired healing take place. It therefore needs to look at the patterns of thought, behaviour, work and culture that were the sources of the 'disease' in the first place. Emphasis is placed on helping people to understand and to take responsibility for themselves, on prevention of disease and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.

The person who is ill is also the healer. Aid can be sought from 'experts' but the responsiblity for healing and health lies within the person who wants to be well.
